[Welcome to the Sci-Fi Lunch Break, where we'll be supplying you with a cool bit of audio/visual goodness to break up the monotony of the work day. You bring the turkey on rye, we'll bring you something out of this world to watch while you eat it.]
Timur Bekmambetov is already a fairly well known name in the Western film world for directing the Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy super-assassin flick Wanted and producing Shane Acker's post-apocalyptic stitchpunk world in 9, but I can only imagine that he's even more popular in his native Russia. It was there that he really kicked his career into high gear with the hyper-kinetic, sci-fi/horror/fantasy hybrid films Night Watch and Day Watch, two films that re-invented the idea that Russia could produce its own blockbusters, and now he's returned home as a producer on Black Lightning, the trailer for which can be consumed below.
There are no English subtitles available, but a language barrier is inconsequential when there are flying cars shooting rockets at other flying cars. /Film quotes Bekmambetov as calling the film, "the Russian response to Transformers and Batman." Now with all the Bayhem-inspired visuals on display I can easily see where Transformers fits into the picture, but I'm a little hazy on the Batman connection. Either way, I'd describe it as "the Russian response to a fever dream I had playing with hot wheels when I was 8 years old."
