Natalie Portman to Slay the Undead in 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies'We adore the pretty Natalie Portman, but can she really pull off a version of Jane Austen's heroine Elizabeth Bennett, who also happens to be as expert at killing the undead as she is at winning the heart of one Mr. Darcy? We think -- and hope -- so.

According to Variety, Portman will produce and star in a film based on Seth Grahame-Smith's bestselling novel 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.' This very loose adaptation of the Austen classic involves Bennett trying to connect with Darcy in a time where a lethal virus turns the dead into flesh-eating zombies. img hspace="4" border="1" align="right" vspace="4" alt="Natalie Portman to Slay the Undead in 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies'" id="vimage_2527546" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/blog.moviefone.com/media/2009/12/natalie-1260556309.jpg" />We adore the pretty Natalie Portman, but can she really pull off a version of Jane Austen's heroine Elizabeth Bennett, who also happens to be as expert at killing the undead as she is at winning the heart of one Mr. Darcy? Though the story takes obvious liberties with a revered novel, given our culture's obsession with Gothic story lines -- Dracula, Frankenstein and the Mummy -- it's logical that a somewhat twisted version of 'Pride and Prejudice' could capture readers' and moviegoers' imagination.

Portman, who shined as a conniving Anne Boleyn in 'The Other Boleyn Girl,' is a great choice for the horror genre. The role requires femininity and toughness, which was her calling card in the breakout role in 'The Professional,' so it makes sense that she would want to revisit this character again. It's a killer idea for the A-list actress who's been stuck much too long in good-girl roles.

"Natalie and I are longtime passionate fans of Jane Austen's books and this is a fresh, fun and thought-provoking way to approach her work," says producer Annette Savitch. "The idea of zombies running rampant in 19th century England may sound odd, but it lends a modern sense of urgency to a well-known love story."

'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' is being financed by Lionsgate and will be produced through Portman's production company, HandsomeCharlie Films. She currently stars in 'Brothers' with Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal, another Lionsgate-backed venture.

With any luck, Portman's turn as a Regency period zombie-killer could give her career a high-flying kick back to the top.
