Here's a scary thought -- we're ending the first decade of the 21st century with two horror films that had varying degrees of success at the box office. First up is the harrowing 'Paranormal Activity,' which took in $107 million and reinvigorated shoestring budget indie filmmaking. At the other end of the spectrum is 'Jennifer's Body,' which barely made a dent with about $16 million in ticket sales. Depending on your mood -- high or low -- either film can offer a suitable way to ring in the New Year/decade. a href="">'Paranormal Activity'
What It's About: This intense, chilling story follows a young middle-class couple that becomes increasingly disturbed by things that go bump in the night -- in their bedroom, while they sleep. Thinking they're being haunted by some sort of paranormal presence, they set up a video camera to find out what's happening and, over the course of three weeks in September and October of 2006, they run nightly surveillance and capture indelible proof of 'Paranormal Activity.'

It's Kinda Like:
'The Blair Witch Project' meets 'Poltergeist'

What We Say: Like 'Blair Witch,' 'Paranormal Activity' is presented as if it were shot cinema verite style, by the protagonists, and then found after the fact. That makes it truly scary as you're sucked into the "real" events in the "real" lives of the two characters. And, like one of our all-time scary favorites, 'The Haunting,' there's no need to see ghosts or demons to get scared to heck -- silences and the suggestion of the supernatural can go much further in instilling fear than special effects. It's all in your head.

'Jennifer's Body'

What It's About: Small-town high-school cheerleader Jennifer (Megan Fox) gets possessed by a hungry demon and transitions from being "high school evil" -- gorgeous, stuck up and ultra-attitudinal -- to the real deal: evil evil. When she begins feeding off the boys in the school, her lifelong best friend Needy (Amanda Seyfried), long relegated to living in Jennifer's shadow, must step-up to protect the town's young men, including her nerdy boyfriend.

It's Kinda Like: 'The Exorcist' meets 'Heathers'

What We Say: You're either going to really, really like this or really, really hate it. Screenwriter Diablo Cody ('Juno') pulls out all the stops in trying to make this a hip, cool fable about how women's bodies are exploited by ... ah heck, what can you say about a movie with hot bod of the year Megan Fox chewing up (literally) all the boys around her. This is definitely "eye candy" for cult film worshipers.
