Wondering what may be in store for Wikus and Christopher in the future? Would you settle for a glimpse at their pasts instead? District 9 director Neil Blomkamp has long expressed interest in revisiting his world of alien apartheid if there was enough demand for a sequel, but in a new interview with the LA Times blog Hero Complex, the filmmaker hints at a preference to do a prequel:

"If you go forward [with his story beyond "District 9"] it's more of a traditional film but if you go backward I'd be intrigued in that," he admits. "I'm not so interested in aliens coming back and blowing things up but [a prequel] might be interesting."

What kind of prequel, though? I think fans, if they don't get to see an explosive, Independence Day-like revenge story, would at least want to see the outer space origin of the prawns. Yet Blomkamp specifically states that he wants to continue exploring the character Wikus (Sharlto Copley). So would this just be an expansion of the events already presented to us at the beginning of the original film? That seems pretty unnecessary, no?
