Opposite one of the genre's best young actors -- Ryan Reynolds -- Lively has been cast in the DC Comics feature 'The Green Lantern,' Variety.com reported Friday.

A release date of June 17, 2011, has been planned, and Martin Campbell ('Casino Royale,''Edge of Darkness') will direct. TV powerhouse Greg Berlanti (executive producer on 'Brothers & Sisters,''Eli Stone') will write the script.

Reynolds is no stranger to physically demanding action shoots, as he packed on weight for 'Blade: Trinity,''Amityville Horror,' and 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' in recent years. Besides action, Reynolds works well opposite his female co-stars, including Sandra Bullock and Betty White in 'The Proposal,'Julia Roberts in 'Fireflies in the Garden' and Abigail Breslin in 'Definitely, Maybe.'

The third season of Lively's low-rated but critically popular 'Gossip Girl' goes through May 2010. She also currently stars in the indie drama 'The Private Lives of Pippa Lee,' about a May-December romance, and next appears opposite Ben Affleck (who also directed) and Jon Hamm in the Massachusetts-set crime drama 'The Town.'

This will be a stretch for Lively, who has mostly starred in small-scale comedies such as 'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2' and 'Accepted.'
