Robert Downey Jr. won't be riding off into the sunset for 'Cowboys and Aliens.'

The Los Angeles Times reports the actor has dropped out of the Universal/DreamWorks project, which would've reunited him with his 'Iron Man' director, Jon Favreau. 'Cowboys' is based on a graphic novel about a race of aliens that land in 19th-century Arizona with the intent to enslave the local population -- until a group of cowboys and Apache Indians decide to fight back. Downey would've played the lead role of Zeke Jackson, the gunslinger who leads the anti-alien revolution.
