You might say Pandora is being removed from the box -- or at least from 2D movie screens in China, where 'Avatar' has become its highest-grossing film to date.

According to the LA Times, the government is pulling the Golden Globe-winning epic from 1,628 2D theaters. Its replacement: a biopic based on the life of Confucius.

In the meantime, 'Avatar' can still be seen in the approximately 900 theaters that house its 3D version. But the question remains: What caused the Chinese government to take such action?
