Kevin Costner is returning to the director's chair for the first time in seven years, and he's also returning to familiar acting territory in a lawman role. He'll wear both a sheriff's hat and a director's cap for the movie 'A Little War of Our Own.'

Variety (subscription required) reports that the film is about a local sheriff who must keep his town from erupting into violence during World War II. (The other lead role is that of a German U-boat captain.) The screenplay is by Dan Gordon, who co-wrote another sheriff movie for Costner, 1994's 'Wyatt Earp.' Producing is Armyan Bernstein, whose four collaborations with the star include Costner's last directing effort, the 2003 western 'Open Range.'
