Nothing makes the internet go insane quite like superhero casting news. The sheer number of rumors and hearsay and surefire scoops is maddening. Message boards turn into war zones. Civility goes out the window. If the internet had existed in the 1980s, the news of Michael Keaton being cast as Batman would have caused the entire system to explode. Literally. As in we'd all be sitting in front of burnt out, smoking computer husks.
We've seen rough times, but I don't think we've seen anything quite like the clusterf*ck that's been the Captain America casting. Who's still in the running? Who was actually considered? Who is actually going to play Captain America? Questions, questions.
A few weeks ago, Cinematical got its hands on some inside info all but confirming that John Krasinski was ready to slip into Cap's costume. Today, FOX411 acted like they were the first ones to hear this and reported the exact same thing. Old information being regurgitated? Or a confirmation of the previous report's accuracy? Time for that 'ol copy and paste:
"John has read 4 times and is doing screen tests...He has screen tested 2 times so far. It's very likely that he will be the new Captain America. He is a favorite among the key decision makers and has been asked to come back for more this week...The big bosses are having him read with multiple actresses up for the female leads. They want to lock down the role and then they will narrow down everyone else."
Krasinski does not seem like the superhero type at first, especially since everyone knows him as that goofy guy who keeps looking at the camera in The Office, but I think it's an inspired choice. He's a good looking, earnest guy with a helluva chin. He's got what the folks in the industry like to call a "little sumthin-sumthin."
But not so fast!
Now Deadline is reporting that Chris Evans has joined the list of possible Captain Americas and that Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), two previously rumored actors, are back in the running. The report makes it very clear that every other rumored name, including Krasinski, is officially out.
What does this mean? I don't know. Consider my mind blown if Krasinski went from "sure thing" to "out of the running" in 24 hours.
As for the other guys? I have no opinion on Vogel and Hedlund other than "they look really pretty."
I do, however, have an opinion on Chris Evans and that opinion is "Hey! I can get behind that casting! Evans is a really charming and talented actor who has yet to truly break through and become the leading man he was obviously born to be. He has experience in the superhero genre, having starred in Push and made the otherwise abysmal Fantastic Four movies watchable. Give him the part! Wow, this is a long opinion."
A fistful of rumors, a few possible debunkings and no real answers. That's superhero casting for you!
No matter what eventually comes to pass, for better or for worse, we'll be hearing why it's completely wrong. Probably in ALL CAPS to signify anger. Hey, we "survived" Robery Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Heath Ledger as The Joker. Take a deep breath guys. Just let things play out.
