In honor of St. Patrick's Day, we've decided not just to wear the requisite green or indulge in a celebrated Irish beverage, but to also pay tribute to our 17 favorite (living) Irishmen in filmdom. (Some of the actors and filmmakers hail from Northern Ireland but self-identify as Irish, and who are we to argue?)
It's a shame we couldn't come up with a corresponding list of Irish actresses, but very few of them have crossed over into Hollywood films in the past couple of decades. Even in movies about Irish characters, the women tend to be played by Brits (Samantha Morton in 'In America,' Nicole Kidman in 'Far and Away,' Minnie Driver in 'Circle of Friends,' Cate Blanchett in 'Veronica Guerin'). Hopefully soon there will be just as many Irish women to celebrate as men. We'd even take "just a few" for now.
