Chris Evans, no stranger to superhero roles, will be suiting up in red, white and blue tights to play Captain America in Marvel Comics' big-screen adaptation of the comic book hero created in 1941 to help defend America from its enemies.

According to a report at The Hollywood Reporter's HeatVision blog, Evans was offered the lead role in 'Captain America: The First Avenger' last week but sources said there was some question if he would accept it. Evans had played Johnny Storm -- the Human Torch -- in Fox's 'Fantastic Four' films and rumors had it that he might not be ready to take on another superhero persona. According to THR, he took a couple of days to think it over and, during the weekend, accepted the deal. a href="http://www.moviefone.com/search/Chris%20Evans">Chris Evans, no stranger to superhero roles, will be suiting up in red, white and blue tights to play Captain America in Marvel Comics' big-screen adaptation of the comic book hero created in 1941 to help defend America from its enemies.

Marvel had been searching high and low for someone to take on the mantle of Steve Rogers/Captain America, and a host of names had been bandied about, including Chris Pine, John Krasinski, Mike Vogel, Chace Crawford, Scott Porter, Ryan Phillippe and Channing Tatum.

The Paramount film, directed by Joe Johnston, is now in pre-production with a 2011 release date. Other stars rumored to be interested in the film include Keira Knightley and Emily Blunt. Already cast as Red Skull -- one of Captain America's enemies -- is Hugo Weaving of 'The Matrix' fame.
