Did 'Kick-Ass' get its ass kicked by a long-in-the-tooth family movie? Despite a wave of hype for the new superhero satire, early estimates from Exhibitor Relations suggest that last week's third-place movie, 'How to Train Your Dragon,' edged out 'Kick-Ass' and reclaimed the box-office throne after a three-week absence.

Sunday's preliminary figures showed a take of $20.0 million for 'Dragon' (for a four-week total of $158.6 million), compared to $19.75 million for 'Kick-Ass.' Of course, that close difference of just $250,000 could evaporate (or widen) by the time final figures are released Monday.

Still, it appears that the costumed-crusader movie's Comic-Don-tested geek appeal, the controversy surrounding its potty-mouthed prepubescent heroine, and the tremendous hype that both phenomena created may not have been enough for 'Kick-Ass' to overcome its R rating, lack of starpower -- and 'Dragon's' formidable theater count, still 760 screens above 'Kick-Ass.'
