If you saw Iron Man 2 last weekend, chances are strong that you also saw a teaser trailer for a top-secret movie produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by JJ Abrams called Super 8. Chances are also strong that this footage elicited a "Huh? What was that? Why haven't I heard of this?" reaction from you and your fellow moviegoers. This enticing morsel of footage, apparently shot exclusively for the trailer, is now online at Apple Trailers for your viewing pleasure.
Like the Abrams-produced Cloverfield and the Abrams-created Lost (and to a far lesser extent, the Abrams-directed Star Trek), details about Super 8 are being kept under wraps. Wraps constructed of lead and bound with adamantium. There have been some plot rumors flurrying about these here internets, but you won't hear them repeated by me. Abrams likes to play his little mystery games and every so often, I like to be surprised by what I see in a movie, so I consider avoiding spoilers a win-win scenario for everyone involved.
What little I have seen, and what little I do know, is certainly enticing. Some sort of science fiction story involving Area 51 and possibly an escaped alien? Okay, vague but interesting. Abrams calling this his "Spielberg movie"? Fascinating, particularly if Abrams is going for that 1980s Amblin Spielberg-before-he-decided-to-grow-up-and-make-Schindler's-List vibe. May we be getting a version of Night Skies, the sci-fi horror movie Spielberg toyed with making in the late 1970s before deciding to go with the far friendlier E.T.?
Darn it, JJ. You've got me again. Super 8 arrives next summer.
