Robert Downey Jr.Robert Downey Jr. may now be one of the most-respected stars in the world thanks to Iron Man 2 and Sherlock Holmes, but things weren't always so rosy for the 45-year-old.

A new book about the performer – Robert Downey Jr.: The Fall And Rise Of The Comeback Kid – reveals how his previous substance abuse problems caused havoc on the set of his early films.

Alan Metter, who directed the Sherlock Holmes actor in 80s college comedy, Back To School, tells the book's author, Ben Falk, about one such instance and the way he managed to get payback.

"We were supposed to be filming a scene that featured him and he didn't show up on the set," remembers Metter.
