Val KilmerThe Doors and Top Gun star, Val Kilmer, has been asked to defend himself against accusations that he is a racist if he wants to go ahead and build guest houses on his 5,000 acre ranch in New Mexico.

Officials on the San Miguel Planning and Zoning Commission want Kilmer to explain derogatory comments he has made about New Mexico in the past, according to the Daily Express, as well as recent incidents that have enraged his neighbours.

In a 2003 Rolling Stone interview, Kilmer is quoted as saying that he lived in the "homicide capital of the South West" and that he keeps a gun in his vehicle. He also said that, "80 per cent of people in my county are drunk."
