Update: Paramount has officially announced via press release that they're developing a movie based on Tom Cruise's Les Grossman character. More after the jump ...

It was obvious that Tom Cruise's Les Grossman "producing" the MTV Movie Awards wasn't just ceremony folks pulling some random character out of the ether to anchor the show around. It's been two years since he popped up in Tropic Thunder, and Les was not exactly on the tips of everyone's tongues. But ah, now he is, the perfect segue for Cruise to tell E!Online backstage at the ceremony: "We're working on [a Les Grossman movie]. We're working on it." The site even says he "beamed" as he said it, in that usual bubbly Cruise way.

Two years ago, we might have beamed. The role offered Cruise a break from the bad tabloid life that plagues him these days. It reminded folks that watching the actor on screen could be fun. Scott even wrote a discussion piece about how funny ol' Tom was, and a movie seemed to be imminent. That December, Cruise was talking about the possibility of future videos, and maybe even a movie, but then there was nothing. It's been a year and a half since then, and movie audiences have moved on.
