Anchor Bay had previously announced a Blu-ray release of Sam Raimi's horror classic, The Evil Dead, but now they've spilled the beans with a look at the cover art as well as some of the bonus features via a pre-alert for retailers. Previously released on VHS, LaserDisc, and DVD in countless different versions, The Evil Dead remains a staple in horror canon, launching the careers of both director Sam Raimi as well as star Bruce Campbell.

The most recent DVD version, dubbed the Ultimate Edition, was a comprehensive 3-disc set with a wealth of bonus material. Sadly, the retail alert only lists a handful of special features. On the bright side, one of the handful is a new audio commentary with both Raimi and Campbell. Considering that Anchor Bay released the Ultimate Edition DVD set, it makes you wonder why the wouldn't go ahead and include all the bonus material that they could into a deluxe Blu-ray set. Even a Blu-ray disc of the film and then a standard DVD with the previously available special features would be acceptable.

The Evil Dead has already been released so many times, fans have been bilked time and time again. I know I own at least 3 or 4 copies of the film. I sincerely hope that it either hasn't been announced yet or there were some kind of rights issues preventing Anchor Bay from doing the right thing and releasing the REAL Ultimate Edition on Blu-ray. They may be using up the last bit of their fan loyalty if they're trying to hold out for a future Blu-ray double dip. That may be the fan breaking point. Either way, this initial version of The Evil Dead on Blu-ray is set to drop on August 31st with a suggested retail price of $29.97.
