the roadThe Road, directed by John Hillcoat, 2009

Yes, The Road can be considered a science fiction film. The movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where animals and vegetation are scarce, leading people to scrounge for food and even resort to cannibalism. This adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's popular novel is a bleak but emotional film that follows a father's (Viggo Mortensen) journey through an American wasteland with his young son (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Charlize Theron and Robert Duvall deliver fine supporting performances, but its Mortensen and Smit-McPhee's portrayal as the father-son team that gives the movie its emotional power. Director John Hillcoat is uncompromising in his vision of a grey and hollowed-out world that has little to offer but dirt and violence. This was one of the best films of 2009.
