The rumor that Tim Burton would direct a 3D stop-motion version of The Addams Family was quickly shot down a few months ago, but there is indeed some truth to the story after all. Burton isn't really involved -- yet -- in any capacity, so it makes sense that his people denied the news in March. However, producer Christopher Meledandri, a former Fox Animation exec who's about to release Despicable Me at Universal, at least confirms existence of the project:

"It's all very, very early," he told, "but we are developing with [Tim Burton directing] in mind ... We're just now at the story phase."

Well of course Burton would be in mind for something like an adaptation of Charles Addams' cartoons. But what if the director declines, finally realizing that his fans want him to do something original for a change? This seems so appropriate for Burton that few others could substitute, though obvious other choices could be Burton pals Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas), Mike Johnson (co-director of Corpse Bride) and Shane Acker (9).
