Daniel Craig as James BondJust when it seemed like the series had almost got back into its stride (by the casting of Daniel Craig, I mean, not the step backwards that was Quantum of Solace) it would appear that MGM, due to ongoing financial difficulties which have already suspended the highly anticipated The Hobbit, have killed the new Bond film stone dead.

Things looked promising for it too - scripted by Peter Morgan ('Frost/Nixon'), directed by Sam Mendes and possibly starring Rachel Weisz as the top villain, Bond 23 could have been a glorious new dawn for the world's favourite super spy.

As everyone seems to agree QoS didn't match the brooding majesty of Casino Royale (which had stomped all over the gaudy excess of Pierce Brosnan's later films), so a new Bond outing was definitely needed to bring the franchise back on target.
