For years, a loud cry of "Hi-ho, Silver! Away!" couldn't get the modern remake of 'The Lone Ranger' on the right track. Word about the project first hit back in 2007. It was a year before Johnny Depp signed on to play Tonto in 2008, and his star power wasn't enough to get the wheels turning. By 2009 the project was stalling.

But now, as 'True Grit' preps for its dusty Western arrival (read our review), Disney is once again eager to bring the the grit of the Old West to the big screen. Gore Verbinski agreed to direct 'The Lone Ranger' last month, and now Tonto is offering up his suggestions on who should play the leading man in the mask, John Reid.
Unfortunately, they're not exactly inspired options. Depp told Entertainment Tonight that the push is on to find the Lone Ranger. Depp says: "There's so many interesting possibilities out there. Brad [Pitt] would be great. [George] Clooney would be great. Don't know who it's going to be just yet."

The actor's options aren't nearly as interesting as Moviefone's recent picks, which include Tom Hardy and Jon Hamm. More specifically, Depp's choices give the affair a tongue-in-cheek air. (Though he could, just as easily, be giving painfully obvious and uninspired choices to throw us off the real track.)

However, Depp swears that this cinematic incarnation will diverge from the series. Depp's maternal grandfather is Cherokee, and he wants Tonto to be portrayed in a different light: "Native Americans in cinema, over the past however many decades, have been treated somewhat shabbily. This one has plans to rectify that." Just how they'll do that remains to be seen. Could they maybe be making Tonto the front-and-center hero?

Whatever the case, it sounds like Disney needs some help with casting, so who would you suggest don the mask and play the Lone Ranger? We're hoping for Tom Hardy since Johnny Depp + Tom Hardy would mean one heck of a charisma battle on-screen. Who would you pick?
