Pee-Wee Herman (Paul Reubens)One day after we reported that Judd Apatow will write and direct a spin-off from 'Knocked Up,' featuring the married characters played by Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, Pee-Wee Herman said Apatow may still direct his movie. In Pee-Wee's own words: "Go ahead and scream your head off!"

As reported by The Wrap, actor Paul Reubens, dressed in character as Pee-Wee, told reporters that Apatow "has not decided" whether to direct the movie. In his role as a producer, Apatow is developing a project that will send Pee-Wee Herman on some kind of grand, adventurous road trip. Apatow's involvement was reported last summer, but at the time, Apatow was not planning to direct the film. Reubens suggests that Apatow is waiting to read the script, which is not yet completed. (Reubens and Paul Rust are writing it.) But Reubens allayed any concern that the road trip will venture into darker territory: "Judd very much wanted to do a reality-based film that's very much more like 'Big Adventure,'" referring to the first feature starring Pee-Wee Harman (and directed by Tim Burton).
Apatow enjoyed great success with his debut feature, 'The 40 Year Old Virgin,' which he wrote (with Steve Carrell) and directed. Since then, he's shepherded a flock of comedies as writer and/or producer, including 'Superbad,' 'Walk Hard' and 'Pineapple Express,' but the films he has chosen to direct have been more personal projects: 'Knocked Up' and 'Funny People.'

The 'Knocked Up' spin-off will be an original story centering on the bickering couple played by Rudd and Mann; we probably don't need to remind you that Apatow is married to Mann, so clearly it will be another personal project. And the film already has a release date: June 1, 2012.

On the face of it, then, it doesn't seem likely that Apatow would have time (or possibly the inclination) to tackle the directing duties for the next big screen Pee-Wee adventure. But we all live in hope -- and that includes Pee-Wee Herman himself. So why not recruit Tim Burton to direct?
