Joseph Gordon-Levitt played an alien on 'Third Rock From the Sun' back in the day, but he's just downright subhuman in the teaser for his new indie drama.

The 'Inception' star -- and future 'Dark Knight Rises' baddie -- is hell-bent on trouble as homeless anarchist Hesher, the titular character in writer/director Spencer Susser's feature film debut.

Living in his van until he meets vulnerable 12-year old T.J. (Devin Brochu) -- whose mother just died, rendering his father (Rainn Wilson) emotionally crippled and incompetent -- Hesher takes the kid under his wing. For better or worse.
'Hesher' Trailer

Things only get more complicated when checkout clerk Nicole, played by Natalie Portman, gets involved. In the film's first trailer, viewers are treated to drama, flaming diving boards and T.J. learning how to survive in an increasingly confusing world.

Of course, if you're more the romantic type, you could always break out your copy of '(500) Days of Summer.' Less advisable? A bootleg of 'No Strings Attached.'
