The monster-movie craze knows no bounds. First came the zombies, then the vampires and werewolves, and now another classic monster is about to make a major comeback.

Several 'Frankenstein' films are in development, and none of them are opting for cheap thrills. Pulitzer-winning playwright David Auburn ('Proof') is scripting an adaptation of Peter Ackroyd's novel 'The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein,' while 'Pan's Labyrinth' director Guillermo del Toro is developing a remake of the classic 1931 Boris Karloff flick, Deadline reports.

Multiple other 'Frankenstein' projects are in development, including Summit Entertainment's adaptation of 'This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein' and 'Ladder 49' director Jay Russell's take on the graphic novel 'Wake the Dead.'
