Is Guillermo del Toro in dragon withdrawal? Well, it has been more than a year since the director dropped out of 'The Hobbit' -- which, for you non-geeks, features the evil dragon Smaug -- and his recent comments in the LA Times hinted that he would consider taking another crack at a fire-breathing creature, this time in Disney's 'Maleficent'

For those unfamiliar, the movie is a retelling of 'Sleeping Beauty' from the side of the green witch. Tim Burton was originally attached to direct but eventually dropped out to pursue other projects. Although del Toro hasn't been asked to take over the project, it sounds like he would strongly consider it if it was offered.

Hit the jump to see what del Toro had to say about the film when speaking with the LA Times recently.
Let me put it this way, if they ask I'll take the meeting. I think Maleficent's dragon is the only design with the wings separate from the front legs, the only time that design has ever worked. And let me tell you how much of a fan I am. I have a collection of over two or three dozen Maleficent figures, some of them four or five feet tall."

Del Toro already has a pretty full plate, what with 'Pacific Rim' (which he directed) and 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark' (which he wrote and produced) on the horizon. However, it would be awesome if he ended up getting this job. After all, we are still a little bummed we won't get to see his version of Smaug.

So what do you think: is Del Toro the right guy to take this movie on?
