Yesterday, 'Bridesmaids' became the highest-grossing Judd Apatow movie ever (which is pretty impressive considering its competition: 'Knocked Up,' 'Talledega Nights,' 'Pineapple Express,' etc.). Even more impressive was that this was the first lead role for SNL cast member Kristen Wiig. Yes, she's been in plenty of films before, but this time Kristen was the star.
That got us thinking about other SNL cast members starring in movies and how they ended up doing at the box office.
Check out the list below and see how Wiig stacks up to former SNL personalities (and yes, we realize that these numbers don't take into account increased ticket prices).
'A Night at the Roxbury'
Will Ferrell's nightclubbing, head-jerking comedy made only $30 million. However, he's gone on to star in tons of big-budget comedies such as 'Old School,' 'Anchorman' and 'The Other Guys.'
It's hard to believe 'Tommy Boy' grossed only $32 million at the box office, considering the rate people quote it today. Regardless, it doesn't get better than Chris Farley playing a traveling salesman for a brake parts company.
'Beverly Hills Cop'
Remember the days when Eddie Murphy used to be a movie star? At this point, 'Beverly Hills Cop' feels like a lifetime ago. Or maybe that's just because we can't stop thinking about how bad 'The Adventures of Pluto Nash' was.
Before 'Caddyshack' there was 'Foul Play,' where Chevy Chase plays a detective who tries to solve a crime involving albinos, dwarves, and the Catholic Church.
Considering it was 1979, $43 million ain't too shabby for a film with Bill Murray cast as the head counselor at a cut-rate summer camp. A year later, he was playing Carl Spackler in 'Caddyshack.'
Molly Shannon's 'Superstar,' based on SNL character Mary Katherine Gallagher, didn't hit box office gold. Twelve years later and Shannon's mainly stuck to supporting roles in films.
'Billy Madison' may have only made $25 million, but it doesn't really matter: Adam Sandler is now one of the most bankable guys in Hollywood.
'Down to Earth'
It took years before Rock was finally given a chance to star in his own film, which did a respectable $64 million at the box office.
Tina Fey / Amy Poehler
Before Wiig's 'Bridesmaids' came along, Fey and Poehler held the record for debuts from female SNL cast members with this comedy about a single mom and her unlikely surrogate.
'Wayne's World' is still the highest-grossing movie based on an SNL skit, as Mike Meyers went on to star in two (much) bigger franchises: 'Austin Powers' and 'Shrek.'
Before Kristen Wiig, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler there was Gilda Radner. In her first starring role, she played Gloria Link, the daughter of the President of the United States.
