At advance screenings of 'Straw Dogs' around the country on Wednesday night, lucky members of the media and general public were shown an eight-minute sizzle reel of 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.' (Both 'Straw Dogs' and 'Dragon Tattoo' belong to Sony Pictures.) Reactions to the David Fincher-directed footage -- which also featured a good chunk of the film's score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross -- varied between fawning and awestruck, though whether it will get released online in some capacity (perhaps via the viral Tumblr blog Mouth Taped Shut) is currently unknown. Before you buy tickets to showings of 'Straw Dogs' on Friday, note that Slashfilm reports the reel won't be attached to prints of the Rod Lurie-directed film this weekend. [Slashfilm]
How come there are two competing 'Snow White' projects due out in theaters next year? Let screenwriter Jason Keller -- who wrote the version of 'Snow White' that Relativity Media is putting out with Lily Collins in the titular role -- explain: "'Snow White' I wrote in December 2010, and that is unheard of, in terms of writing a script and going into production when it did," he told Vulture. "I'm just being very frank about it ... at the end of last year, [Relativity] looked around, and they saw Universal was coming out with a 'Snow White.' But they had a script that wasn't really working, but they knew they wanted to try to keep that, so when they hired me, the first conversation we all had about that was, 'How do we beat that other project?' So it was literally something like, 'We want to beat that other project. We are very, very motivated to do a 'Snow White' project.'" UPDATE, 9/19: Per Relativity Media, the studio's 'Snow White' project actually began when the studio purchased Melisa Wallack's 'Untitled Snow White' script in May 2010; Keller was hired last December to work on her existing draft. Cohen Media Group has purchased the U.S. distribution rights for Luc Besson's 'The Lady,' "the story of Burmese pro-democracy activist and political prisoner Aung San Suu Kyi." The company will release 'The Lady' -- which stars Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis -- for an Oscar qualifying run later this year. [Deadline]
