Wes Craven will probably be back for a fifth 'Scream.' Assuming the script is good. Craven told Movieweb that a fifth and sixth film are in the works, but he never signs on to direct until he sees the finished product. Producer Bob Weinstein is gung-ho about continuing the series, even though 'Scream 4,' which came out in April, disappointed at the box-office. Still, despite the lack of written word and a waning interest in the series, Craven has some thoughts about where the story should go next. It has something to do with the ambiguous ending of 'Scream 4.'
Asked by Movieweb about what would happen to the surviving characters, Craven joked, "I'd have to kill you if I told you." He said he liked the fact that 'Scream 4' didn't end with a "hook" for the next film. "We felt it was better to let the audience speculate than to have all of these clues placed in their lap."

Craven says the odds are in favor of a fifth film because Weinstein wants it to happen. "Whether I will be a part of it or not? I don't know. My contract gives me the first look. If they show me something that is really wonderful? Of course I will be a part of it."

Odds are good, since Craven hasn't turned them -- or far less promising projects -- down yet. He explained how the 'Scream' machine works:
Typically what will happen is that Bob Weinstein or Kevin Williamson will come up with a new idea, and they will pitch it to one or the other. If they both like it, they will toss it around and see if they can develop it into an overarching concept. Then I get the telephone call. They say, 'We have something to show you.' ... Going into ('Scream 4'), the first meeting I had with Kevin Williamson, he did sketch out a 'Scream 5' and 6. The idea was that we were doing the first in a new trilogy. We had to wait to see if we made enough money on each film to make the next one viable. If that happens, those two will come up with the concepts and an idea that is worth fulfilling.
'Scream 4' comes to DVD and Blu-ray on Oct. 4.
