Tom Cruise is returning to battle. According to Variety, the actor has signed on as the lead for the Doug Liman-directed 'All You Need is Kill.' Based on the graphic novel, the story follows a soldier involved in an alien war, who's forced to relive his last day over and over again (it's like 'Groundhog Day' with guns; or 'Source Code' with aliens). Cruise was reportedly not the first choice for the studio, who originally wanted Brad Pitt to star. The script also called for a younger actor, but it's already been "rewritten to make the character fit Cruise's age."
The last time audiences saw Cruise in battle, it was in full samurai garb during the 2003 film, 'The Last Samurai.' There is currently no start date for 'All You Need Is Kill.'

Cruise will be seen in 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' later this month; he's currently filming 'One Shot' and has the sci-fi thriller 'Horizons' on the -- er -- horizon too.
