Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have separated, at least temporarily, reports People, with a rep for the actress confirming to E! News that the A-listers "are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage."
While Douglas, 68, and Zeta-Jones, 43, have traveled and hit events solo in recent months, insiders reveal to People that neither star has pursued legal separation or divorce.
Married since 2000 and exactly 25 years apart in age (they share a September 25 birthday), the couple hasn't had an easy go of it in recent years: Douglas battled stage IV throat cancer in 2010, and Zeta-Jones sought treatment for bipolar II disorder in April 2011.
"The stress has taken a toll on their marriage," a friend reveals to People.
"[Being bipolar] is something I have been dealing with for a long time," Zeta-Jones admitted in an interview with UK's The Telegraph last month. "When you get sideswiped like that [with Douglas's illness] it's an obvious trigger for your balance to be a little bit off –- not sleeping, worry, stress. It's a classic trigger."
When asked about the secret to her 13-year marriage in that same interview, the "Red 2" star said, "Respect, space, and a sense of humor. We spend a hell of a lot of time together, so we are careful to maintain our space."
The couple has two children, Dylan, 13, and Carys, 10.
