The summer movie season already seems like a distant memory, and the lightly-stacked box office this weekend is nothing if not an indication of that.
Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez are an unlikely duo in "Getaway," about a man on the hunt for his kidnapped wife. Brent (Hawke) is a former race-car driver who has wronged a mysterious baddie (Jon Voight), who, in turn, takes Brent's wife captive. Now, he must race against the clock to rescue her. So where does Ms. Gomez come in, you ask? Well, Brent commandeers her car and she tags along for the ride.
Moving on from Gomez to some of her pop-star peers, the concert movie/documentary "One Direction: This Is Us" also hits theaters this weekend, to the delight of every tween who has ever kissed a Harry Styles poster. The movie follows the band as they recount their humble beginnings, reflect on their big break on "The X-Factor," and perform at London's famed O2 Arena.
Neither of those strike your fancy? There are also a few movies opening in limited release this weekend.
In "Afternoon Delight," perpetual scene-stealer Kathryn Hahn stars as Rachel, a Los Angeles housewife bored with her domestic duties and her marriage. After she gets a lap dance from a stripper named McKenna, Rachel feels compelled to save her and adopts her as a live-in nanny. The bold move spices up Rachel's hum-drum life.
"Passion," starring Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace, "The Lifeguard," starring Kristen Bell, and "Empire State" starring The Rock and Liam Hemsworth, also open in select theaters this Friday.
