"Tear 'em up, boys. Destroy the old and build the new."
That line from a new trailer for "Kill Your Darlings" sums up the Beat Generation -- the experimental, innovative, non-conformist poets who challenged and changed culture in the 1950s.
The movie stars Daniel Radcliffe as Allen Ginsberg, Dane DeHaan as Lucien Carr, Ben Foster as William S. Burroughs, and Jack Huston as Jack Kerouac. The story, based on true events, follows the young men at Columbia University as they drink, take drugs, listen to jazz, and explore their sexuality. But their friendships are tested when a professor infatuated with Carr is murdered.
The trailer gives us tantalizing glimpses of a seedy, seductive New York City. Radcliffe certainly has left his Harry Potter days behind and looks assured and confident as an actor. It seems director John Krokidas has an awards-season contender on his hands.
"Kill Your Darlings" also stars Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kyra Sedgwick and Elizabeth Olsen. It will play at the Toronto Film Festival, then open in theaters October 18.
