For a while now, Disney and Marvel have been touting the fact that the forthcoming sequel "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" would be more like a seventies spy thriller than your average superhero romp. But everything in the trailers -- from Chris Evans kicking ass to Anthony Mackie flying around in a bird costume as the Falcon, has suggested that it is more of the same. But this week, Marvel released a 4-minute chunk of the movie, which gives us the best look yet at the movie's look and feel.
And it does fall more in line with an espionage movie than your normal capes-and-tights adventure.
The clip starts with Cap and his S.H.I.E.L.D. cohorts (the ones that are just too handsome for the ABC series) looking to infiltrate a ship that has been overrun with pirates. A not-pregnant Scarlett Johansson is there, reprising her role as the Black Widow, and Frank Grillo is too, as a new S.H.I.E.L.D. operative named Brock Rumlow (that name!). Cap makes a reference to his barbershop quartet because, remember, he's from the past! Then he jumps out of a plane without a parachute. Imagine if the hijackers from "Captain Phillips" came up against this guy!
What makes the first part of this clip so great is that the action plays alongside banter between Cap and Black Widow. Plus, one of the hijacked dudes is a S.H.I.E.L.D. higher-up! The intrigue! After this extended bit you get some pieces that you've probably already seen in the other trailers or TV clips, including the implied death of a major character who we will keep quiet about now. Also: lots of spaceships zooming and crashing into one another.
