Nathaniel Marston, best known from his years on "As the World Turns" and "One Life to Live," died November 11 after sustaining major injuries in a car crash. He was 40.

The single-car accident happened October 30 near Reno, Nevada, and left him in critical condition. His mother had the gut-wrenching job of breaking the news of his death, and here's the update she shared on Facebook:

Nathaniel Marston UPDATE: November 11, 2015 - Dear family and friends, it is with a heavy heart that I share this...

As she wrote, had her son survived, he would've required a ventilator, wouldn't have been able to speak, and would've lived as a quadriplegic. She knew her son better than anyone and said that's not a condition he would've wanted.

Nathaniel's first role was in the 1996 romantic comedy "Love Is All There Is," which starred Angelina Jolie. He was also in "The Craft," but is still known to most fans from his TV roles, in soap operas but also episodes of "White Collar," "Castle," Law & Order: SVU," and "Blue Bloods."

Our condolences to his family, friends, and co-stars.
