Character player Joaquín Cosio shot from obscurity to fame in early 2008, when the Mexican actor signed on to play Latin American villain General Medrano in Quantum of Solace, the 22nd official installment of the James Bond franchise. That role marked the first transnational crossover attention gleaned by Cosio; prior to it, he appeared predominantly in Mexican productions, including the 2004 crime comedy Matando Cabos and the 2008 slice-of-life drama Teo's Journey.
