After Emergency! folded, Tighe worked on Broadway and in film supporting roles. He was "rediscovered" by filmmaker John Sayles, who cast Tighe in such plum parts as Hickey in Matewan (1987) and gambler Sport Sullivan in Eight Men Out (1988).
