Amy Gray is a Harvard-educated New York corporate lawyer who, after separating from her husband, finds herself back in her childhood home in Hartford, Conn., living with her nagging mom and daughter while working as a judge for Hartford's family court. Acting on instinct more than protocol, Judge Amy tries to mete out justice while struggling with her new status as a single mother. Amy's mom, Maxine, is a caseworker for the Department of Children and Families. Amy Brenneman and Tyne Daly star in this courtroom drama series.

Christy (1994)

At 17, Christy Huddleston decides to leave her comfortable life in Asheville, N.C., to teach at a mission schoolhouse in a rural Appalachian community. The school is run by strong-willed Quaker Alice Henderson, whose speech in a church inspired Christy to take this enormous leap of faith. Once in Cutter Gap, Tenn., she finds herself the object of attention from two very different men: the Rev. David Grantland, a minister from Boston, and Dr. Neil MacNeill, a Cutter Gap native struggling to bring 20th-century medicine to this backwoods community. Christy also discovers a good friend in mountain woman Fairlight Spencer.

Cagney & Lacey (1982)

Mary Beth Lacey and Chris Cagney are female police officers in New York City. The women are partners and friends, but they lead different personal lives. Cagney is a single, career-minded woman, while Lacey is a married mother. In addition to going after the bad guys, the ladies also have to combat sexism in the male-dominated workplace. Tyne Daly stars as Mary Beth Lacey and Sharon Gless plays the part of Chris Cagney for most of the series.
