"300" was an innovative and imaginative action film, but the follow-up, 300: Rise of an Empire, is nothing but a disappointment. show more

Stunningly shot and stupidly written. show more

Israeli director Noam Murro does an excellent job of managing and expanding the franchise established so vividly by Zach Snyder. show more

The only saving grace is Green, the reigning witch-queen of cinema. The smoky-eyed French actress, best known for “Casino Royale,” “The Golden Compass” and “Dark Shadows,” throws her all into the performance, going bare-chested at times, bared-teeth at others. She’s like Elizabeth Taylor’s "Cleopatra" possessed by a succubus — which is a good thing. Without her, 300: Rise of an Empire would be bloodless and brainless. show more

    Todd McCarthy The Hollywood Reporter

Other than for the pleasure of watching Green try to conquer ancient Greece dressed as a distant forebearer of Catwoman, more is less and a little late in this long-aborning sequel. show more

The empty violence and pointless style are only the biggest problems. show more

Even with the uniformly good performances — and the standout work from Ms. Green — 300: Rise of an Empire is foremost a triumph of production design, costumes, brilliantly choreographed battle sequences and stunning CGI. show more

This is digital fake-ism all the way. Audiences bought it the first time; they're likely to buy it a second time. show more

    Kyle Smith New York Post

Green rules the picture with her nutty stare and her willingness to get nasty in a hot sex scene, but the movie’s main weak point is the Greek general Themistokles. show more

The lack of a creative driver behind the film leads to a level of fundamental dissatisfaction. The movie delivers all the necessary elements but their impact is dull. show more

What a sorry excuse for a sequel; dumbed down, corny, too much "mushy" dialog. The trailer had all the best parts. I'm sure King Leonidis was crying as he watched this movie from Hell. Plus, I can't wrap my head around that actress playing his wife, acting in anything else other than Game of Thrones

I love great villains, Eve Green was one of the best so far this year. Waiting for Maleficent to come out....Angie may beat her on that one.

The 3D effects were great and costumes fabulous but I would have enjoyed the movie more without the role in sado masochism.

I loved the first 300--have it on dvd. This one is NOT in any way, shape or form as good! Alot of violence!! Rape, murder, lots of blood, gore, Just gross. Yes, I did get up and walk out and get my money back!! I left before I needed to feel like I needed a shower!

It simply gets NO BETTER THAN THIS!!! If you loved the 1st one you'll absolutely LOVE this 2nd. It delves into the back stories of the characters that matter, the violence is perfectly on point, and LOVE LOVE the display of women's strength in their ferocity for their ideals & beliefs. GREAT GREAT!!

I thought the film was great and the special effects were awesome. It is one of my favorite themed movies of all time. Can not believe the critics cant just enjoy the fun this movie provides and the incredible special effects and the amazing battle scenes and try not to read something deeper into it
