Plot Summary
Crotchety Victorian businessman Ebenezer Scrooge (Alastair Sim) has no use for festivity, even at Christmas. After resentfully allowing timid clerk Bob Cratchit (Mervyn Johns) to have the holiday to spend with his loving wife (Hermione Baddeley) and family, Scrooge is swept into a nightmare. The ghost of his late partner, Jacob Marley (Michael Hordern), appears, warning that Ebenezer will be visited by three more spirits who will show the coldhearted man the error of his parsimonious behavior.

In my opinion, the very best version of Charles Dickens' tale and one of my Top 25 all-time favorite films. Hurst's flawless direction and Alistair Sim's captivating portrayal of Scrooge are pure magic. After you see "A Christmas Carol," you'll understand why John Ford asked Hurst to assist him in Ireland during the filming of "The Quiet Man" with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. No Christmas is complete without this 1951 version of Dickens' timeless classic. (Note: the film was originally released under the title "Scrooge.")
