It was 1980 when I first became aquainted with this delight of a film. What a wonderous time for a preteen/teen girl. And this film, from the magique of the chemistry between actors to the enhancing quality of the original score. WOW! Everything added together equals to my favourite all-time film, ever! Thirty-six years later made it the best birthday gift I have ever received, too. I recommend this in the utmost manner to everyone. Enjoy!

One of the best date movies ever made. Young people in a first love treated realistically and sympatheically, but with no condescension. Olivier is great; the young actors first rate. One of Diane Lane's first movies.

At the twilight of Sir Lawrence Olivier's career and the dawn of Diane Lane's this delightful story offers both several moments to show the "chops" that mark both as A++ performers. By and large the direction and editing was first rate -- but the first third of the film drug a bit -- and could have been cut a bit tighter -- as the story was telegraphed by the introductory scenes. The writing itself was effective and the sub-titles seemed very well translated with the switches back and forth between English & French done well. Sally Kellerman was believably shallow as a parent -- either type-casting (HotLips) or better acting than she is usually given credit for. All of the young actors were excellent -- but the interaction between Lane & Bernard was quite nuanced. A VERY good story that touched the heart.
