I went in with very high expectations and came out very disappointed. The movie was slow and there was no real plot development. The main character was so pathetic you wanted to reach out and shake him. The rest of the characters were uninteresting. I was tempted to walk out several times but decided to stick around because I figured SOMETHING had to happen but I was mistaken. Please skip this movie. If you're Jewish maybe it's worth a rent and that's a big maybe.

Very sad depressing film. How can you laugh at this film when you should just be crying out loud for this poor man. Total comic cruelty, not my kind of humor. WORST MOVIE I HAVE SEEN ALL YEAR AND SHOULD HAVE WALKED OUT!!!!!!!

A brilliant satire. An ancient religion no longer taken seriously by American middle class surburbanites. E.G. The beautifully respectful portrayal of the bar vitzva and the young candidate who had no idea of its signifacance. Mr. Val Bettin

enh..i looked at my watch a couple times...lauged a couple times. Thought i might have enjoyed it more if I were Jewish. Certain kind of humor that I'm not really a fan of. The message was underwhelming. Had it's moments, but slow. If you love that style of farce and/or Coen brothers (not just Fargo/No country), yeah- it'll be enjoyable. If not, pass.

I know this movie isn't for everybody, and not everybody will get it, but I loved it! The humor yes, but also the symbolism and moral messages were huge!

This is one of the worst movies I have seen all year. I can't believe the critics liked it. It had no story, no character development, no plot, no anything. It wasn't even funny. Just a total piece of garbage. I find the quality of the Coen brothers films to be wildly inconsistent--just like Steven Soderbergh. I liked Fargo but hated Barton Fink, The Man Who Wasn't There, Ladykillers, and now this one--A Serious Man. All I can say is the Coen Brothers give arthouse cinema a bad name. I do NOT recommend this movie. Not even to my worst enemy.
