In the Mexican countryside of the 1920s, teachers are finally being sent to poor areas. Bright young Antonio (Diego Gonzales), a boy of 10 years, yearns to begin his education -- but first he needs a bicycle so he can get to school. By chance, the town's hapless mayor (Gregory Sierra) is so frustrated over his inability to ride his new bike that he tosses it in a ditch. Antonio finds the bike, but his decision to take it has unforeseen consequences for the entire village.
