Just signed up to respond to bbwtonight's post. Doesn't sound like you've seen this movie. Neither have I, but it is obvious just from watching one... trailer that this is based on the book \"The Borrowers,\" so as they are acknowledging that, it is not a copyright violation...duh. I am rating it 4-stars based on the trailer and intend to see it soon. Full Review
sounds like plagerism except for movies instead of books. Hasn't anyone ever seen \"The Borrowers\"? There was also a weekly TV animated... show about Little People under the floor that borrowed things that was discovered by a little boy, can't remember the name. But this synopsis sounds so identical just completely redone in anime style by disney. Full Review
If you go to this movie expecting a movie like every other Hollywood movie \"animated for kids\" you will be disappointed. Story-wise,... etty is fare meant to be digested slowly and thoughtfully. There is some discussion of death and how we should live our lives when we don't know what's coming next. I was pleasantly surprised the movie didn't shy from such heavy topics, though it didn't dwell on them either. It struck a good balance there. On the other hand, there aren't too many twists to stun, kiddish potty jokes/cute one-liners, or danger at every single turn, which I found extremely refreshing as well. I came out of the theatre feeling like I had been relaxing for a few hours, instead of run over by a train like some movies do today. I can remember going to movies as a kid and being annoyed because the family would get in an argument afterward, every time, with everyone hyped up and in their own little world from too much time in front of a movie screen. I left Arrietty feeling at peace, very unlike most movie-going experiences in my memories. I suspect that if you go expecting something to blow your mind, you will be disappointed (and have missed the point.) The animation, being 100% hand-drawn, physically painted cells, is really artistically iimpressive, especially if you know anything about what it takes to make hand-drawn animation. (Not to hate on Pixar's 3D works, because they have made monumental strides with 3D animation that I respect as an artist, and their stories have all really appealed to me post-Toy Story.) Still, given that everyone in Hollywood does 3D now, or even just uses it to create camera movements that would be technically difficult in the extreme otherwise, I really can't say enough how much I love Studio Ghibli for kicking it old school in a world where people think that's no longer cool enough. They make it cool. I would say for anyone who appreciates artist virtuoso, it's worth seeing this, if just to soak up the little details of Arrietty's animation. That was actually what I spent most of my time paying attention to. Full Review
