I love Bette Midler, and this is one of my favorite movies. The actress that portrays CC Bloom as a young actress and singer is incredible. Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey portray the ups and downs of a long-term intimate friendship. They have a falling-out, and re-unite, and ultimately CC helps to take care of her friend while she is dying and takes in her daughter.. CC marries John, a Director of a small theatre, who initially falls for Hilary Whitney (Barbara Hershey,) but whom to CC's advantage has to leave New York to go back to California to take care of her ailing father. Hilary meets and marries an attorney, becoming a conservative stay-at-home wife. She discovers that her husband has taken a lover and is planning on divorcing Whitney to marry "the other woman." She also discovers she is pregnant. The next several years the two maintain their friendship, until Hilary starts feeling ill and discovers she has a heart disorder. She struggles with the knowledge of her mortality, and knowing she won't be around to watch her daughter grow up. Hilary turns to CC for help and support, and ultimately decides to leave her daughter to CC's care after she dies. The moive combines humor, sadness, and hope. I highly reccoment it.
