McGregor goes bone-deep in a performance of shining subtlety. And a never-better Plummer is simply stupendous, refusing any call to sentiment as he shows us Hal's resonant lunge at life. Mills works the same way. Beginners is one from the bruised heart. show more

As for Plummer, I don't know how he does it, but he somehow radiates gayness. It's nothing overt, just some internal shift, but if you saw only 10 seconds of Plummer in this film, you would know he was playing a gay man. You just might not know how you know it. show more

What results is a disarmingly honest tale of affection, both romantic and filial. show more

The film's special mixture of sadness, comedy and hope sneaks up on you and stays in your memory. show more

What's refreshing about Beginners is its sympathy for all of its characters, which translates into the characters' sympathy for each other. show more

Joe Neumaier New York Daily News

Beginners is filled with crises of identity, but underneath it all is a beautifully humane, sweet and intelligent movie that knows exactly what it is at every moment. show more

    Kirk Honeycutt The Hollywood Reporter

All the movie's playfulness rubs off on the actors. Scenes crackle with life. The chemistry among all the actors is terrific. show more

    Stephanie Zacharek Movieline

Beginners is all about beginnings that begin with endings - the point, Mills seems to be saying, is that sometimes you need to say good-bye to make room for hello. show more

Disappointing. Talented actors Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer give good performances. But their work is wasted in this odd and plodding melodrama that tries to appear deep and significant.

This movie was so boring ************** the energy right out of me. Slow, lifeless, pointless, predictable.

Interesting film -- bittersweet. Oliver is so very sad! He had a mother with a great sense of humor, but he obviously was affected by the lack of affection/friendship between his parents, and didn\'t realize what the cause was until his father came out. Thought the film got a little tedious at times, but Arthur, the Jack Russell terrier, was a charmer!

The dog did steal the movie. First off, this movie is marketed as a comedy. It is a tedious family drama with tiny moments of comedy. mostly from the dog. You don\'t care about any of the characters. Skip it. I fell asleep. 4 times. I am a gay man and this gave me no insight into familles, sexuality, relationships whatever. My female companion didn\'t like it either.
