It could have been the 21st-century Showgirls. I wouldn't have missed that for the world. Instead, Burlesque, starring Cher and Christina Aguilera playing drag queen versions of themselves with all the vitality of Madame Tussauds wax dolls, is a bust that lacks the pizzaz and bugfuck nuttiness of Paul Verhoeven's 1995 trash epic. show more

It's big, perfectly cast and entertaining in every way, but more than that it feels like a generous public event. show more

It bristles with exuberant numbers that strain beneath the weight of cliché. show more

Basically a theme-park version of a tawdry tradition. show more

Burlesque is a preposterous and intermittently entertaining lesson in how to make a movie musical with a little brains and a lot of talent. show more

Sure, sometimes it's fun to be assaulted by sequins, wigs, corsets and retro homage. But Xtina's fans can find all that already - in videos ranging from "Lady Marmalade" to "Ain't No Other Man" - without having to sit through two hours of recycled plots and plastic acting. show more

Women will love this, and men won't mind the eye candy either, so it looks like this Screen Gems release can't help becoming a hit. show more

It's silly and often laughable, but it's a sweet fantasy, too, produced in loving homage to the frothiest traditions of stage and screen. show more

But what makes Burlesque truly delectable - for the first half, at least, before its going-nowhere storyline really heads south - is its less obvious camp value. show more

Reminiscent of Showgirls minus the sex, nudity, sleaze, bad acting and horrible dancing, Burlesque is a typical A Star is Born story. show more

How does moviephone know I\'m checking reviews when I haven\'t logedin?Well, considering my Orientation, I\'m obligated to praise anything with both Cher and Christina in it but this was remarkable....but in the right mood, Moulin Rouge is a favorite. Cuba Libro and long live the Free Spirit. Peace.

I have always been a Cher fan, musically as well as acting. Paired up with Christina was brilliant. Although I am not usually attracted to musicals, I love this film and being a true lover of music, Christina fully succeeds to give me those chilly goose bumps, especially on \"Bound to You\". Santa brought me the soundtrack CD and I play it very LOUD in my car. Thanks Christina and Cher :)

Saw it on TV last night for the first time! Thoroughly enjoyed the performers, specially Christina. Great movie regardless of what the critics say. Top notch...Better than Glee which is a fun show. Let\'s have more musicals and down with American Idol!!!! Doesn\'t anyone remember Star Search???!!!! Tired of reality TV. Bring back Carol Burnett-type TV shows!!!!!!

Enjoyable and Chrisina Aguilera is delightful! Notice how it was well received with those who actually watched it (audience) rather than those (critics) who \"prejudge\" with a bias... (this is where we get the word \"prejudice\" from). Music is great and the dance numbers need to be seen! Forget the critics---they think being snarky is cool....Good old fashioned movie about small-town girl trying to make it in the big city!

Excellent movie! It showed you can work burlesque and still values. The choreography was off the charts, expecially the finally. Christina did an awesome god; she and the entire cast made it look easy!

I was not aware that Christina could sing like that, where have I been to have missed her and now I am a fan, will purchase her music, the movie too. Cher is a fighter in life, I became a fan of hers music, the person she have become later in my life and this movie proved me correct. I am a black woman in Philadephia who feel the same about Diana Ross and love Celine too.
