Filmmaker Hou Hsiao-Hsien (City of Sadness) is among Taiwan's most influential late-20th-century filmmakers. This documentary from his friend and colleague Olivier Assayas offers an in-depth look at Hou's life and fascinating career as he and a camera crew follow the filmmaker through Taipei and into the countryside while he shows Assayas where he was raised. Taiwanese film critic Chen Kuo-Fu offers his insight into his country's cinema and Hou's place with in it. Film clips punctuate the conversations.
