This was not a movie title one would get excited about. The second time it came on TV, I watched it, the third time I taped it and have seen it over... and over. It is a movie that could confuse your mind if you started out a Baby Saver. Ruth was just a dopehead and was pregnant after already having several children. The judge there knew she had cost Omaha a lot of money in drug treatments and taking 2 of the kids and calmly suggested that she could \"see a doctor\" while in jail. Ruth made the news and money came pouring it from both Pro Life and Baby Savers. Kurtwood Smith did his greatest part in this movie, as did Mary Kay Place and \"Harlan\". The filming was great and each scene was completed before jumping into another. The film was not designed to set the viewer one way or another, and Alexander Payne was clever enough to keep it evenly balanced. Some called it a comedy because of a couple of funny scenes. I didn't see it that way. Full Review

A hilariously brazen comedy whose heroine is an improbable hoot.Full Review
Is it really possible to make a comedy about abortion? Alexander Payne, who cowrote and directed this mischievous bit of sociological screwball, has brought it off.Full Review
A deft, three-dimensional performance from Dern, playing an almost entirely unlikable character, aids incalculably in exposing what happens when political factions lose touch with the realities of the issues for which they claim to provide answers.Full Review
