Now that the fanboy hype has cleared, we can see Cloverfield for what it is: borrowed inspiration, trite screenwriting and amateurish acting all in the service of a ballsy idea -- that a horror movie could maybe, just maybe, have a soul. show more

Produced by "Lost" and "Alias" mastermind J.J. Abrams, Cloverfield has been one of the more interesting experiments in large-scale guerrilla filmmaking. show more

The genre may be old news, but the skillfully made Cloverfield offers a heart-racing experience with plenty of chills, thrills and exhilaration. show more

Much scampering, yelling, quaking and crying is required of the actors, and they acquit themselves well enough, even with oozing fake wounds and prop rebars piercing their shoulder blades. show more

Manhattan has always been a fat target for apocalypse filmmakers, but with its 9/11-inspired imagery, Matt Reeves' breathlessly fast-paced Cloverfield is going to resonate with New York audiences in a way no other horror film has. show more

Think "Godzilla Unplugged" -- with chillingly effective results. show more

Mercifully, at 84 minutes the movie is even shorter than its originally alleged 90-minute running time; how much visual shakiness can we take? And yet, all in all, it is an effective film, deploying its special effects well and never breaking the illusion that it is all happening as we see it. show more

It’s dumb but quick and dirty and effectively brusque, dispensing with niceties such as character. show more

    Rene Rodriguez Miami Herald

There are a few surprises lurking in Cloverfield, and director Matt Reeves has an uncanny ability to time his jolts and scare when you least expect it. show more

Cloverfield is content to be a creature feature; that's what makes it bearable and what keeps it from greatness. The genre, not the script, does the psychological heavy lifting. show more

I do not think Toho Studios have to worry about this monster picture replacing Godzilla, as it has none of the entertainment nor the imagination that a Godzilla movie has. You can watch a Godzilla movie and enjoy it, it had something to offer. This movie does not. It comes from the looser who gave as Atlas and Lost TV shows, they must have been lost in the clouds or on drugs when they wrote this screenplay. There is no acting in it either, Looks like they cast people who could not even make it in Daytime Television soaps. It only makes me see how good the 60's Godzilla movies really are.

Saw this movie recently and can just say "DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!!!" It was the most horrific mashup of popular monster movies I have ever seen. It should really be titled "Monster Movie" so people know it's a parody and a piece of crap. More or less "Godzilla but from the collateral damage's view of things and not the usual Hero/Heroine's perspective. If you wonder what it was like for the bystanders when "Monster Movie X" was produced here's your movie. This movie contains all the things one expects of a monster movie and borrows shamefully from so many other movies it is not even funny. The only thing that could be seen as "good" with it is the ending that is so perplexing that one does not really understand it is finally over until the credits start to roll. Also it leaves more questions than answers which might be good if you like that sort of thing. I personally hate it and that was one more thing that pulled down the review rating. Well done if one wants to milk out another movie and create a franchise. So this is exactly why I give it just ONE star.

I really thought it was good. Also like with the monsters in it. I wasn't scared of it at all. I didn't really get to finish it.

What a colossal waste of time. The home movie shaking was even worse than the plot. The only thing that was stylistic or clever was getting us to pay for it. Okay, one for the studio but now it's our turm.

I think Cloverfeild was a pretty good action/ horror/ sci-fi/ movie and will have you on the edge of your seat. It kinda has that Blair Witch Project feature to it and the special effects are great. The camrea might make you a little dizzy after a while, but it's a pretty good movie. It's kinda like War of the Worlds times a million.
