With death a central focus, so much is revealed about the Japanese character. It could be used in college course. The contrasting moods of this movie, it covers all emotions. All characters were so convincing where one could identify with them. The rage of a parent when a daughter has been killed by a boyfriend's cycle accident, who could not feel that.

I just discovered this wonderful film, I watched it three times in two days and found all sort of meanings. Every frame was a masterpiece. I am going to add it to my foreign collection which had Cinema Paridiso at the top. Now it's a tie.

Beautifully filmed and wonderfully acted. It took a dark subject and gave it a smattering of beauty and dignity.
